Indie Southern rock group, Soul Circus Cowboys (Kismet Nashville) returns to the country music scene with the re-recording of “I Got Mexico.”* The reimagined dance mix, slated for release on Friday, April 4, 2025 via all major digital retail outlets and streaming platforms, spotlights a special vocal performance by original recording artist Eddy Raven. Raven released the song in 1984 as the first single from his RCA album I COULD USE ANOTHER YOU; the recording was Raven’s first No.1 hit (Billboard Hot Country Singles Chart).
“I loved this song as a kid. It was truly a thrill, and honor, working alongside Eddy to re-record the track as a dance mix,” said Soul Circus Cowboys’ lead singer Billy McKnight. “The new rendition has a cool groove, with percussion, horns and strings. This might very well be one of my favorite tracks I’ve ever performed on.”
The harmony opener sets the mood for the easy-does-it vibe and storyline depicting a romantic breakup and travel to a solo destination where the beach and gentle winds chase the blues away. Dressed in Jimmy Buffet style, the island-flavored jam (produced by co-writer Frank Myers) paints the portrait of a sunset postcard signatured with a “so-long, see-ya, goodbye.”
Strong, moving kick drums and bassline carry the groove, while horns and classic gut-string guitar instrumentation lend to the ambiance of swaying palm trees and an ocean breeze. The Spanish interlude adds to the Mexican flavor.
McKnight’s tenor vocals capture the laid-back contemporary spirit of the musical narrative while Raven’s return adds timeless, old-country quintessence.
“The re-recording breathes a new sound that brings new life to the song,” said country music hit songwriter and recording artist Eddy Raven. “Soul Circus Cowboys’ vocal performance, the harmonies and the instrumentation give it a contemporary flavor. It sounds like a whole different song that will attract a new and younger audience.”
“Eddy has been a mentor to me throughout my career; we’ve written and recorded a lot of music together,” said Grammy award-winning, veteran country music producer and songwriter, Frank Myers. “Alternatively, I’ve enjoyed offering my guidance to Billy under my wing through his career. Working alongside Eddy and Billy in the studio brought us full circle and I think our mutual talents and energy in the song is evident.”
The re-recording and release of “I Got Mexico” is the first in a 2025 waterfall series. The band is in the studio putting the finishing touches on Soul Circus Cowboys’ original tunes slated to roll out throughout spring and summer 2025. The corresponding “I Got Mexico” music video will be shot LIVE at Pier 60 Sugar Sand Fest (Clearwater Beach, FL) in April; Eddy Raven will join Soul Circus Cowboys in the on-stage performance and film production.
